The answer to life, the universe and everything.

People often think that 42 is a-tongue-in-cheek pop culture reference. 42 holds a deep esoteric truth, one that provides an understanding of life, the universe and, well, everything.

(A personal note: Because talking about the nature of reality is esoteric in nature, and because I don’t fancy myself a spiritual teacher nor do I wish to be mistaken for one, I have long resisted writing this post. Recent nudges from different directions, teachers and mirrors have me ready to get over that hump. Here hoping I will not regret it.)

In the cult book and movie “The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy” 42 is said to be “The Answer to Life, the Universe and Everything”.
When I named the 501c3 I lead “House of 42” most if not all people assumed it is a hat tip to that pop culture reference. Not quite, or maybe not only, as this movie reference itself is an echo of a deeper truth.
It is said that all art is channeled. Douglas Adams when writing this book, channeled a deep esoteric truth, an understanding of Life, the Universe and Everything, one that can be summarized by the number 42. That understanding has versions across different cultures, (which may not include the 42 reference but have identical or parallel lines). The version below has for thousands of years been passed down orally in the lineage I was born into. It goes something like that:

Two twins in utero are having a conversation:
- Hey brother, it’s the ninth month. We're almost out of here.
- Yea, I can feel it. We’re almost out of here.
- Once we’re out of here, you know, it’s the end.
- I beg to differ, brother. Once we're out of here, it's only the beginning.
- No, once we're out of here, we no longer have this warm liquid that our entire existence has been within. We’ll perish!
- Once we're out of here, brother, we're out in the world, where there are mountains and trees, sun and clouds, moon and stars, lakes and rivers, deers and bunnies, other people...
- What are those things you’re imagining? We never experienced any of those things. Even if they exist- how will we be able experience them?
- With our eyes! Out in the world, our eyes are open and we can see. 
- See? With our eyes? We have never done that. This warm liquid is all we know. Besides, we won't get very far in this world you’re imagining due to our umbilical cord..
- Don’t worry brother. As soon as we're out of here, they cut it.
- They cut it? we’ll die! We need it for our sustenance. 
- Out in the world, we don’t need the umbilical cord. Out there, we breathe with our nose and we eat with our mouth. 
- Breathe with our nose? Eat with our mouth? What are you speaking of, brother? We’ve never done any of those thing you’re imagining. What will we eat?
- At first breast milk, then soft foods and eventually we grow teeth and can chew foods.
-This sounds crazy. Besides- how do we get around, if this nice sack of liquids doesn’t carry us around? 
- At first, we're being carried around, then we learn to crawl, and eventually we stand up and walk on our feet.
- Walk on our feet? These little noodles? they're smaller than our heads! That makes no sense. We will topple right over!
And who supposedly takes care of us while we grow teeth and learn how to walk?
- Mother. Out of here we meet mother, ima, and she takes care of us.
- Oh, you're one of these spiritual types, you believe in “mother”. If that mother of yours existed, how come we never met her? What proof have you of her existence?!
- WE. We are the proof of her existence. We are a part of her and she is a part of us. and if you quiet your busy mind you can feel the pulse of her heartbeat, the rhythm of her breath.. at times you can even hear her voice.
- Listen, brother. If this imagined world of yours exists, where there is life after the womb, a world with mountains and trees, sky and sun, moon and stars, animals and other humans, among them “mother”, a life where we see with our eyes, breathe with our nose, eat with our mouth, and walk on our feet.. If this fantastical world existed, how come no one has ever come back up the birth canal with some proof?”

Mother = Ima= 42
The above parable is said to be an analogy to humanity and the point in time we are in, in our evolution as a consciousness.
Ima- the Hebrew word for mother equals 42 in gematria- the kabbalistic system of numbered letter value. This is one layer in how 42 holds the answer to life the universe and everything. Like that twin in utero, our current perspective may be limited to the layers of reality that are currently available to us. It doesn’t mean that it is wrong, it just means there can be more to life, as per our evolution and readiness as a consciousness.

A (much) deeper layer: the 42 letter name.
The story above sums up how 42 does hold an answer to life, the universe and everything. BUT that’s not all. There is a deeper layer. 42 is also a reference of the 42 letter name- a space time code that the text Ana Bekoach was written to help memorize. (Not to be confused with the 72 names- each of which contains 3 letters). The 42 letter name is NOT the acronym of Ana Bekoach. Ana Bekoach is a text containing 42 words, each begins with the corresponding letter in the 42 letter name. Ana Bekoach was written long after that code was channeled for the code to be remembered.
This, much deeper, cryptic layer of 42 is an advanced set of teachings, reserved for a Kabbalah teacher to teach those deemed ready.

The House of 42 connection
The 501c3 I lead is called House of 42 as the medicines I was granted the responsibility to be custodian of, hold the energy of 42, ima and the 42 letter name. These are not medicines borrowed from our indigenous brothers and sisters but are of the indigenous lineage I was born into. Like many other medicines, they act as “proof” of life after the womb, existence beyond this one, a remembering of which is meant to inform and better our existence here.

This is NOT work of leader and followers. A quote By Albert Camus which best summarizes my approach to space holding goes:
”Don’t walk behind me for I may not lead,
Don’t walk ahead of me for I may not follow,
Walk alongside me and be my friend.”
